Trump's Controversial Plan for World Cup Tourists to Reveal Online Histories Described as 'Chilling'

A newly proposed mandate for World Cup fans journeying to the US to disclose personal social media profile details has been called "deeply troubling."

Compulsory Submission for Visa Waiver Applicants

According to the proposal, tourists from 42 countries—including the UK—who use the visa waiver program would be required to provide details about online accounts they have maintained in the last five-year period. Previously, submitting this information was voluntary.

"The US government's proposed measures are deeply concerning," stated Ronan Evain, executive director of Football Supporters Europe. "Freedom of expression and the right to privacy are fundamental rights. No supporter gives up those rights just because they cross a border."

He added, "The measure introduces a chilling atmosphere of surveillance that directly contradicts the welcoming, open spirit the World Cup is meant to represent and it must be withdrawn immediately."

Roots in an Earlier Executive Order

The plan follows an presidential directive issued by former President Trump in early 2025 that aims "to guarantee that all foreign nationals seeking admission the US are thoroughly checked to the fullest extent possible."

Government Statement and Reasoning

A spokesperson for the border agency provided clarification on the issue. "This is not a change on this front for those traveling to the United States," the spokesperson said. "It is not a final rule, it is merely the initial phase in initiating a process to have additional measures to protect the American people secure."

The spokesperson further noted, "We are constantly looking at how we screen those entering the country, particularly after the terrorist attack in the capital. This new proposal is in line with the earlier Executive Order to thoroughly check those who are entering this country using the visa waiver system by enabling CBP to gather additional information from foreign nationals using the visa waiver programme."
