'Trapped in a Dreadful Dream': Relatives of Unaccounted For Young People Desperately Seek Answers After Ski Resort Fire
The relatives of teenagers missing after a tragic fire at a venue in a Swiss ski resort are enduring an agonising wait for official news and requesting information about their family members via social media.
The blaze engulfed the a popular bar in the alpine resort, located in the Swiss Alps of the Valais region, in the middle of the night of New Year's Day. Confirmed footage show the roof structure igniting as beverages with sparklers are held aloft.
Authorities have indicated that it could take considerable time to formally name the those who perished of the fire, which killed numerous partygoers and hurt another over a hundred. Authorities stated on Friday that the majority of the those hurt have been accounted for, with work still underway to identify the other six.
In the waiting period, families and friends have been taking to social media to plead for any news about their friends who were present at the venue that fateful night.
Desperate Searches for the Unaccounted For
The location of Swiss national Arthur Brodard, 16, are currently unknown, according to an public plea from his mother.
The who lives of Lutry near the city, informed a publication that she had gone back to Lausanne to check whether he was in the hospital, while his other parent did the equivalent search in Bern, but did not locate him.
"This is a living nightmare, an ordeal. Either I find my son in the morgue, or I find him in critical condition. It's terrible," she said.
She explained that some of his companions had been located with injuries covering nearly half their bodies. "There are no words; they endured a terrifying ordeal."
The Italian government has said that a number of of its citizens remain missing.
Among them is Emanuele Galeppini, a teenage junior golfer, originally from Italy but now living in the UAE.
The national sporting body has released a tribute that he is dead, without mentioning the fire, paying tribute to a "young athlete who carried with him passion and authentic values."
His parent, reportedly stated that his son was at the bar and was last heard from around midnight. An official spokesperson has clarified that a formal confirmation of his death is not yet.
Further Cases
Giovanni Tamburi, 16, is also among the missing. His mother said that he had been on vacation but had ventured out with friends and found himself at the bar.
"Someone with him informed me they escaped after the fire broke out and that he had his phone with him, but then at a certain point he couldn't see him anymore," she said, adding he had been wearing a distinctive piece of jewelry.
One of his educators stated, "He was known for his kindness and positive demeanor, coupled with great maturity. He would frequently offer to help out."
Alice Kallergis, who holds dual Swiss and Greek nationality but lives permanently in the country, was also present on that night, according to reports.
Her brother has shared an appeal online, saying the relatives has had "no information" regarding the teenager or the three friends she was with, who are also unaccounted for.
Consular authorities from her country of origin say they are continuing to monitor the developments.
