A trio of officers perished and at least 15 additional individuals sustained injuries in what appears to be deliberate gas explosion at a rural property in northern Italy.

How It Happened

The blast took place as police and firefighters entered the house in the vicinity of Verona to execute an eviction order for two brothers and a sister in their late 50s and mid-60s.

Each of the three deceased individuals served in the Carabinieri force.

Legal Proceedings

A man and a woman got detained at the location and another man who fled following the blast was apprehended not long after. The trio have been transported to hospital.

The blast could be heard approximately 5 kilometers away and footage from the area showed the building left as a heap of debris.

“This is a time for grieving,” stated Interior Minister the Interior Minister, who mentioned that previous tries had been made to remove the three family members in the earlier times.

Property Situation

The president of the region of Veneto, President Zaia, explained the residence was subject to an court order due to debts incurred by the siblings.

Negotiators had been dispatched to engage the family members who had locked themselves into the home. When the officers came soon after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), investigators suspect a family member caused the blast.

“When we entered the property, we faced an utterly insane act,” regional commander the police commander told news outlets.

A propane tank had been ignited, and the blast directly hit our personnel,” he said.

Molotov cocktails were also found at the residence, the interior minister confirmed.

Impact Assessment

The wounded by the explosion included eleven more officers of the Carabinieri as well as a trio of personnel of the state police and a firefighter.

Based on information from the prosecuting attorney, the building was in a poor condition and had was without power.

The prosecutor was convinced the detonation had taken place on a story above the entrance and told reporters it was a “deliberate and pre-planned murder”. Moments before the explosion, he said members had “noticed a hissing sound, likely the propane tanks being activated”.

Local Response

“All of us understood the scenario was critical,” local residents told local news, noting that the family members had earlier warned to “detonate the property” rather than vacate the property.

“The explosion had left a ‘terrible, very painful and dramatic toll’.”

Defence Minister Guido Crosetto stood alongside other government officials in honoring the three men who had died in the line of duty.
